Protocols and architecture
What are the differences between RTMP, HLS, DASH, SRT and WebRTC?
RTMP/RTMPS is the standard ingest protocol from encoders (OBS, vMix, Wirecast). HLS is the most universal output format: compatible with every browser, Smart TVs, Roku and Apple TV. DASH is similar to HLS but an MPEG standard. SRT is used for robust ingest from unstable mobile networks (4G/5G). WebRTC reaches sub-second latency (~500 ms) for interactive cases such as auctions or e-sports. XtreamCast accepts RTMP/RTMPS/SRT on ingest and delivers over HLS/LL-HLS/DASH/WebRTC.
What is the real end-to-end latency of the platform?
With standard HLS (the default configuration), 6 to 8 seconds. With the LL-HLS (Low-Latency HLS) add-on, approximately 3 seconds. With ultra-low-latency WebRTC (add-on), roughly 500 ms. Standard HLS works for churches, classes, concerts and corporate events; LL-HLS and WebRTC are for interactive cases.
What codecs and resolutions do you support?
Ingest: H.264/AVC with AAC via RTMP; H.265/HEVC with AAC or Opus via SRT. Output: ABR profiles in H.264 (240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p). 4K available on Enterprise+. Uncapped ingest bitrate (1–25+ Mbps typical).
How does adaptive bitrate (ABR) transcoding work?
A single signal enters the platform and our transcoder (FFmpeg 7.0+ with GPU NVENC acceleration) generates 4–6 quality profiles in parallel. The viewer's player automatically picks the quality that best fits their connection and switches in real time if the network varies. It reduces buffering on unstable mobile connections.
Use cases
How do I create an online TV channel that broadcasts 24/7?
With the Live Station feature you upload your videos to the panel, organize them into a playlist or programming grid, and the system plays them continuously. Whenever you want to go live, you connect your encoder and the transition is instant. Ideal for regional TV channels, production companies and online radio stations.
Can I use it for private streaming of corporate events?
Yes. Each channel can be public or private with several levels: password, domain restriction (it only plays on your site), JWT tokens (per-user access validated by your backend) and geo-blocking. Useful for internal town halls, trainings and board meetings.
Does it work for e-learning platforms and LMSs?
Yes. The HTML5 player embeds via iframe in Moodle, Canvas, Google Classroom or any LMS. You can restrict access with JWT tokens per enrollment, schedule automatic recording and keep a VOD library organized by subject.
Can I monetize my streaming?
Yes, there are three models: (1) VAST/VMAP ads with pre-roll/mid-roll/post-roll (Custom Ads Manager module on Max+ and Enterprise+ plans); (2) SVOD with a monthly subscription; (3) TVOD pay-per-view for individual events (typical in sports and concerts). For SVOD/TVOD we coordinate the integration with your payment gateway.
Distribution and restream
Can I stream to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch and Instagram at the same time?
Yes. The Restream feature sends a single ingest to up to 10 simultaneous RTMP destinations: YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, Instagram, TikTok, X, Kick, LinkedIn Live and two custom RTMP endpoints. Each destination is configured once and enabled with a toggle on every broadcast. You can also schedule automatic weekly rebroadcasts.
How does the global CDN work and where are the nodes?
We operate a multi-provider CDN with 119+ points of presence in 77 countries and a 250 Tbps backbone. Video is delivered from the PoP closest to the viewer to reduce latency and buffering. Average latency to the nearest PoP from Bogota is <55 ms; from Mexico City, ~40 ms; from Santiago, <30 ms.
Are recordings automatically uploaded to YouTube and Facebook?
Yes. You connect your account once, define the privacy (public, unlisted, private) and from that moment on every recorded video is published automatically. Perfect for churches, online classes and events that want their content available immediately.
Setup, encoders and workflow
What do I need to start streaming?
An encoder (OBS Studio free, vMix, Wirecast or a hardware encoder such as ATEM Mini Pro, Teradek or LiveU), an internet connection with stable upload and an XtreamCast account. You receive the RTMP server URL and stream key within 2 minutes of creating the account. You paste both into your encoder and start streaming.
What RTMP bitrate should I configure in OBS?
Reference for H.264: 720p at 30 fps uses 2.5–4 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps uses 4.5–6 Mbps; 1080p at 60 fps uses 6–9 Mbps. Your upload speed should be at least double the chosen bitrate to leave headroom. If your upload is unstable, consider SRT bonding with a 4G modem as backup.
RTMP or RTMPS, which one should I use?
RTMPS is RTMP over TLS (encrypted). We recommend RTMPS whenever your encoder supports it —practically all modern ones do— because it encrypts the broadcast between your encoder and our server. The latency difference is negligible.
How do I embed the player on my website?
With a simple HTML iframe, copying the snippet from the panel. The player is white-label: configurable with your logo, color palette and domain. It supports basic DRM, WebVTT captions, selectable quality and JavaScript events for your own analytics tracking in GA4 or Mixpanel.
Plans, pricing and support
How much does a professional plan cost?
Plans start at USD 25/month (Started+) with 1 TB of bandwidth, scale to USD 75/month (Pro+) with 3 TB, and USD 175/month (Max+) with 6 TB. All plans share the same features and differ only in bandwidth and storage. Enterprise+ exists for larger operations with dedicated bare metal.
What payment options do you accept? Can I pay annually?
We accept credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), PayPal and bank transfer. Monthly or annual payment with 2 months free when paying annually. Clients in Chile pay in CLP + 19% VAT; international clients in USD. You receive an automatic invoice.
Is XtreamCast a good alternative to Wowza, Dacast, Vimeo OTT, Castr or Restream.io?
Yes. We offer the same professional capabilities (RTMP, HLS, recording, restream, analytics) but with 24/7 support in English and Spanish, competitive pricing and scalable plans without contracts. We have detailed comparisons: XtreamCast vs Wowza, vs Dacast, vs Vimeo, vs Castr and vs Restream.
What kind of support do you offer?
24/7 support in English and Spanish via WhatsApp directly with technicians, email and tickets. Average first-response time during business hours: <30 min. We also actively monitor every stream in production: if your bitrate drops, we usually see it before you do. Personalized onboarding available.
Security, compliance and SLA
What SLA do you offer and what happens if you fail?
A contractual SLA of 99.99% uptime, equivalent to less than 53 minutes of downtime per year. If we fail, automatic credits are applied to your next invoice proportional to the recorded downtime, no claim needed.
How do you protect my content from piracy and hotlinking?
Multi-layered: SecureToken™ SHA-256 with IP validation, Domain Guard™ with FNV-1a hashing that blocks embedding on unauthorized domains, per-country geo-blocking, signed JWT tokens, basic DRM and an HLS manifest protected against scraping. AES-256 encryption in transit and at rest.
Do you have DDoS protection?
Yes, Always-On DDoS across all 119+ CDN PoPs at no extra cost, with automatic mitigation at the network level and layer 7. A WAF (Web Application Firewall) with heuristic rules and machine learning.
Where is the infrastructure hosted and are you GDPR/LGPD compliant?
Infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), both with SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certifications and inherited GDPR (Europe) and LGPD (Brazil) compliance. Personal data is processed according to the privacy policy published at /en/privacy-policy.
